With a mere two weeks left before Christmas, it’s safe to say we are deep in our annual pre-holiday stress fest. It’s no secret the holidays are a chaotic time for everyone, but the impending deadline of having to hop on a flight 6000 miles across the globe at the end of it all really kicks things into overdrive. Each year, we travel to Dubai to be home for the holidays, which means the weeks prior are usually a flurry of check lists that need to be complete before it’s time to board that flight.
This year, before getting lost in the excitement and mayhem of it all, we took a weekend to spend some quality time with each other at the InterContinental Hotel Toronto Centre, while giving back to a good cause. In collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, the InterContinental’s Gingerbread Package allows you to take some time off and bring out your inner child, all while doing good. The Gingerbread Package includes a 1-night stay in a deluxe room, breakfast for two, a gingerbread decorating kit, and more. Best of all? A donation is made to Habitat for Humanity. As much as we whine and groan about the stress of the holidays, it’s important we take the time to reach out and help vulnerable communities in the GTA, especially given how unforgiving the winter can be. Habitat for Humanity currently has 54 homes under construction in the GTA, and will have completed 29 of those homes by year end. That’s 29 more families with a roof over their head by the time the year is up! Every dollar and ounce of effort counts. If you’re not able to make the staycation, you can still participate in Habitat for Humanity’s Annual Gingerbread Build at your leisure. The gingerbread houses are valued at $50, but you can order one for pick up for just $25. Either way the entire $50 goes towards building homes for working, low-income families. We put our decorating hats on and designed our first ever gingerbread house - a little shabby chic pastel number (shabby chic is our way of saying this was way harder than it looked but we’re rolling with it).
We proceeded to eat a large chunk out right of the house (#sorrynotsorry), settled in for the night watching P.S. I Love You , and went to bed thoroughly excited for breakfast. The pictures speak for themselves…
We left the InterContinental energized and with our hearts full with the knowledge that we would be helping (even if in a small way) build homes for those in need in the GTA. The Gingerbread Package is available until December 30 (starting at $299 per night), so you still have plenty of time to rejuvenate and give back before the year ends.
